“Sweet Home Alabama” is the prom queen and gets all the headlines. “Free Bird” is the class clown and gets all the pop culture referencing. But my valedictorian of the Lyndyrd Skynyrd class is easily this song. Yeah, it’s a cover tune but it’s one of those cover tunes where the cover has become the definitive version. The extended solos throughout the song, including a piano solo that even Jerry Lee Lewis would love, are absolutely fan-freakin-tastic. I just love this song and it gets me singing and shakin’ and poundin’ my air piano with much enthusiasm.
From the 1974 album Second Helping by the kings of Southern Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, I’m kicking off your weekend with the legendary J.J. Cale tune “Call Me The Breeze”.
