If you’ve known me long enough you know full well my feelings towards dance music. The Twist on Saturday nights was not what you’d call my favourite past time but dammit that’s where the girls were. This song is from long after I stopped going to The Twist or any other such nightclub.
I didn’t purposely hear it but it was hard to miss around the turn of the century. And I’ll admit that it’s a fun song that gets me tapping a toe and whatnot. But that is not the only reason it’s on this list. It’s on this list because for years I misheard the lyrics. But I didn’t just mishear them, I misheard them in what I truly believe to be a superior version.
As you’ll soon discover, the words “funk soul brother” play a prominent role in this song. The sound very obvious once you’re told this, but for the longest time I thought he was saying “funk so proper” which, I assert with the appropriate caution of a middle aged, jock rock bred white boy in these matters, is better.
Kicking off the Halloween weekend with something way out of my wheelhouse; “The Rockafeller Skank” by Fatboy Slim from the 1998 album You’ve Come A Long Way Baby.
