A Crock of Schmidt

Single-handedly solving nothing

My Life Is A Song #49

Shirthead Countdown #49

Ah, yes, more rarities from a very brief period in the mid-nineties when I actually explored music a bit.  That exploration led me to own a handful of ultimately one hit wonder albums, some of which say less about the quality of the bands and far more about the fickleness of listeners.

This band also represents only the second time I ever purchased a newly released album without ever hearing a song from it first.  This may sound like a strange fact to harp on, but considering I only did it twice in my entire life, once for Honeymoon Suite and the other this band, it becomes painfully obvious that I’m weird.

In fairness, to call this band a one hit wonder is perhaps unjust.  They had one smash #1 hit, for sure, but two or three other songs in their career did chart though nowhere near the top.  In the big picture, that’s still one hit wonder territory.  And while that #1 song is fantastic, it was this song, one of those middling charters, that I like best though the fact I bought their follow-up sound unheard confirms that the entire debut album was a winner in my book.  I also have no regrets about the sophomore release, a fine work under-appreciated by a public that had moved on.

The band has a cool name that will resonate with Muppets fans.  And the song is an unabashed rocker with a fantastic guitar riff that sounds better the louder you turn the volume knob.  Let’s kick off the weekend with “Cruel To Be Kind” by Spacehog from their smash 1995 debut Resident Alien.
