This is going to sound terribly un-PC but whatever happened to chick rock? Maybe it’s just my lack of attention since the turn of the millennium, but I just don’t hear about girl bands kicking ass anymore. In the nineties there were a few years where some really awesome women hit the rock/punk scene with good guitar driven, sometimes angst-laden, music. Now they’re all back to playing pop music and television talent competitions. Perhaps this is a curse of fatherhood, and age, that I don’t know anything beyond Adele and Taylor Swift anymore.
Whatever the case, in the nineties the ladies were rockin’ and I loved it. One such band, named after the spoiled brat in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, will be kicking off your weekend. I give you “Volcano Girls” by Veruca Salt from the 1997 album Eight Arms To Hold You.
